The goal of the Environmental Health Program is to protect the citizens of Lawrence County by preventing or reducing the risk of disease transmission and by working to provide a safe and sanitary environment.  All programs involve enforcement of state laws and local ordinances.  We also provide appropriate education and consultation.

Food Sanitation

Grocery stores, bakeries, taverns, school cafeterias, private clubs, daycares, and restaurants are inspected 1 - 3 times yearly based on risk classifications.  The Environmental Health Division sponsors two 15-hour Certified Food Sanitation Mangers Classes, held at the Lawrence County Health Department, also including 5-hour renewal courses.

Potable Water Supplies

The potable water supply program is provided to protect the people within Lawrence County from contracting and transmitting waterborne disease.  Existing private water systems are evaluated and sampled upon request of the owner/occupant.  Non-community public water supplies serving rural businesses, churches, etc., are routinely inspected and sampled.  Construction permits are issued and inspections are conducted for all new water supplies.

Sewage Disposal

Construction permits are required for all new and renovated private sewage disposal systems.  Inspection services include plan review, site evaluation, final inspections, existing systems inspections, and real estate evaluations.

Other Activities

Nuisance Control    A variety of citizen complaints are investigated.  Corrective action is taken when the situation is determined to be a public health problem

Mosquito Control     A mosquito abatement program is conducted during the appropriate months.  Breeding source elimination, larvaciding, and adult spraying are the main components of this program.

Homeland Security     The network of County agencies and volunteers continue to meet on a regular basis.  This group continues to prepare and plan for any disaster that could affect the citizens of Lawrence County.
